The Goscor Earthmoving Equipment cluster of businesses – namely Bobcat, SANY and Goscor Power Products (GPP) – has completed its relocation to new premises in Boksburg, Gauteng. The move was originally planned to be completed in March, but was delayed due to the national Covid-19 lockdown.

The combined premises at the corner of Romeo Street and Denne Road in Hughes are much bigger and better equipped than the previous headquarters. This will give the Bobcat and SANY brands the headroom required to expand their presence in South Africa.

“The move has been a gargantuan project,” Bobcat Equipment South Africa and Goscor Earthmoving Equipment MD Barry Owen comments.

“As you might well imagine, moving these businesses – along with all of the people, stock, and infrastructure – has been an extremely complicated process. As such, we thank everyone for their ongoing patience, and look forward to welcoming everyone to our new home!”

The co-location has also been particularly significant for GPP, which has been a standalone business for many years. “With GPP being on its own for so long, joining forces with Bobcat and SANY makes good business sense as we have similar customers and markets,” MD Mark Bester highlights.

“We can also leverage the synergies between the different companies to gain access to other markets where we are not traditionally present or active, which means a greater total footprint for the entire group. We have always been a close-knit family in GPP and are looking forward to co-locating with some of our other Goscor Group companies. It is an exciting time for us and I am sure we will continue to grow from strength to strength,”

Bester adds.

The Goscor Earthmoving Equipment staff members who managed the project were Siviwe Gushu and Mfundo Majola. From a construction aspect it involved breaking down drywalling to allow for a more modern open-plan office environment. Parts of the workshop facilities had to be converted into a parts warehouse, while the old warehouse became a showroom and offices specifically for GPP.

The old boardroom has been turned into an entertainment area, complete with a wooden deck and braai area. New branding and painting has ensured that the look-and-feel of the premises is consistent with that of the Goscor Group.

Challenges with the project included sourcing the different suppliers and service providers, having multiple briefings as a result of this and a constantly-evolving scope of work. Packing, transporting and then unpacking the parts warehouse was a massive undertaking all by itself, in addition to moving all of the equipment, especially the heavy SANY machines.

“These are world-class facilities and moving here was a great decision for our business. It is built for the type of work we do, is more functional in terms of layout and infrastructure and is also a prime location,” Majola points out.

“The project has been a great learning experience. It has activated a possible passion for project management as a full-time career,” he adds. Indeed, Majola began his career at Bobcat as a Project Coordinator, before moving over to his current role in March 2019. “I was involved in various projects for the company and worked on internal departmental projects,”

he concludes.
